New York: Anderson & Ramsay for James Miller, 1867. Hardcover. 3 volumes. 16mo (6.9 in, 17.5 cm. [2] xxiv, 17-458 [2] pp.; frontis.

An early admirer of Mary Wollstonecraft, Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1801-61) authored works to challenge the female stereotype. "Political and didactic, these works emphasized the right of a woman to speak and to act, in world affairs as in her private existence." Her moving poem "The Cry of the Children" published in Blackwood's Magazine in 1843 generated public support for child labor reforms. Friends with women writers including M. R. Mitford, Matilda Hays, and Eliza Ogilvy, Browning's admirers included Emily Dickinson, George Eliot, and Virginia Woolf.
