First edition: Author and naturalist, Sarah Orne Jewett (1849-1909) belonged to a community of women artists and corresponded with authors including Harriet Beecher Stowe and Willa Cather. Jewett's "Boston marriage" to Annie Fields lasted 30 years. Fields ran a successful literary salon for women writers. Sarah Orne Jewett 's novels and short-stories centered on women whether strong, old, isolated, or self-reliant.
