All edges gilt. 11 illuminated pages with Persian motifs: half-title plus opening each of 10 chapters. Text pages with red border designs. "It is richly embellished in the Oriental taste; glittering with golden arabesques, in every fanciful form and changing rainbow-hue," according to Tait's Edinburgh Magazine XII p. 808. Marbled endpapers. Silk placeholder. Provenance: front pastedown with armorial bookplate of Edmund Sydney Williams; front free endpaper with illustrated bookplate of J.J.H. by bookplate artist William Fowler Hopson; rear pastedown with small label of American collector Albert A. Howard as AHA; rear free endpaper with 20th-century penciled ownership. Mildly rubbed along extremities. Costello (1799-1870) was an accomplished Anglo-Irish artist and prolific, critically acclaimed and professional poet and author. These works by Persian poets include the first English-language appearance of Omar Khayyam's quatrains, preceding Fitzgerald's Rubaiyat by 14 years.
