First edition: "Original edition of this study on marriage in antiquity, dealing with its institution, ceremonies and nuptial costumes, and the rights and duties of married women. The book is dedicated to Virginia Fieschi, who married Jacopo VI Appiano, lord of Piombino, in 1547. Title contained in a beautiful frame engraved on wood populated with muses, satyrs and putti.” - Alde. Pietrasanta prints the text in italic with 8- and 10-line historiated woodcut initials. Searches of NUC and WorldCat locate only three copies in U.S. libraries.

Half-vellum over boards, printed paper sides; spine with wormhole near top, back cover cracked across top corner, repaired (at the time?) and now strong, front cover creased across top corner. Front pastedown with faint indication of a small bookplate's removal and with old pressmark "26.1.88" in upper left corner. Minor worming in inner margin well removed from text, brief old graceful note on front free endpaper and on p.  at rear, recent penciled reference notes on verso of front free endpaper and more so on rear pastedown, gathering "C" toned."
